Local Artist and High School Art Teacher Passes Away at 73

Beloved Educator and Acclaimed Watercolourist

Alice Stewart Grimsley, a native of the South Carolina Lowcountry, has passed away at the age of 73. Grimsley was a beloved high school art teacher and an accomplished watercolorist and oil painter. She was known for her vibrant and colorful depictions of the Charleston scene.

Grimsley was born in Charleston and grew up in the town of Mount Pleasant. She studied art at the College of Charleston and the Art Institute of Chicago. After graduating, she taught art at several high schools in the Charleston area, including Wando High School and James Island High School.

Grimsley's work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the Southeast. She was a member of the South Carolina Watercolour Society and the Charleston Artist Guild. Her work is also included in the permanent collection of the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston.

In addition to her teaching and painting, Grimsley was also an active member of the community. She was a volunteer at the Charleston Museum and the Gibbes Museum of Art. She was also a member of the board of directors of the Charleston Artist Guild.

Grimsley's death is a great loss to the Charleston art community. She was a talented artist, a dedicated educator, and a generous spirit. She will be deeply missed.

A memorial service for Grimsley will be held at the Gibbes Museum of Art on Saturday, August 26, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alice Stewart Grimsley Memorial Scholarship Fund at the College of Charleston.
