Diane Abbott suspended as Labour MP

Former Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott has been suspended from the Labour Party pending an investigation into a letter she wrote about racism to the Observer.

The party's National Executive Committee (NEC) wrote to Ms Abbott in December, informing her that she had been suspended and that an investigation would be carried out.

The letter is said to have contained "offensive" and "inaccurate" claims about racism within the Labour Party. Ms Abbott has denied the allegations and said she will cooperate fully with the investigation.

Ms Abbott is a long-standing member of the Labour Party and has served as an MP since 1987. She is a former Shadow Home Secretary and Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities.

The suspension of Ms Abbott is the latest in a series of high-profile cases of Labour MPs being suspended or expelled from the party over allegations of racism or anti-Semitism.
